Monroe v. Roedder

Greg Monroe, Sr. suffered quadriplegia after his SUV collided with a minivan that made an improper turn. The issues were whether Mr. Monroe could have avoided the accident and the level of attendant care Mr. Monroe needed for the rest of his life. At trial, the Judge granted Mr. Monroe's Motion for Directed Verdict regarding whether he could have avoided the accident, leaving only the issue of damages for the jury to decide. The defense suggested an award of $1.5 million for Mr. Monroe and $100,000 for his wife. The jury awarded Mr. Monroe $18 million and his wife $3 million. The jury's verdict was the largest personal injury verdict in the history of St. Louis County and the largest in the State of Missouri for 2008.
